We stayed one night just for a place to rest. Since it was Sunday, I couldn't make a reservation-just got a recorded message, but it had the phone number for the Park Ranger, so I called and left a message and he actually called back! He was very helpful and friendly and said we could show up whenever, and gave us the code to get in if it was after 10pm and gave us directions since he said the GPS would send us to another location about 6 miles away. His directions worked and we made it just fine. There are wooded sites and bay side. The wooded are $16 and the bay side $20 plus $3/per person for the state park day fee. We stayed at the bay side area and it was okay - nothing special but we do like being by the water. It's on a seawall rather than a slope to the water.
Very nice well-kept campground. Secluded and quiet with plenty of tree coverage, but not too much. We came in after hours and the office had detailed instructions on choosing a site. They have a great system where they list each open site on a chalkboard as well as a sheet of paper with info and a map with each available site and you take the one you want, which means the next late check-in knows it is no longer available. It is only about 1/2 mile from the beach and all the action. The laundry room is clean and convenient and worked well $1.00 ea for wash / dry. The only weird thing was that they advertised $28.50/nite on the sheet and she rang up $32 on my credit card without a breakdown for taxes. I asked her about it and she said the difference was tax. No AAA discount.
We stayed at this park based on previous reviews which had comments about their free shuttle into New Orleans. When we called to make the reservation, we asked them if the shuttle was running the next day and the staff told us 'yes'. We got there at 7:30 PM and again asked about the shuttle and was told I had to sign up so I did. The shuttle driver was there listening, and told us that it was full. The staff person argued with him and said there were still two spots left,(thankfully she was right). You would hope that they would be thoughtful enough to let me know when I made the reservation that I needed to sign up for the shuttle in advance (apparently, if it is full - too bad for you!). The shuttle leaves the park at 9 AM. We were there early, and watched a couple who showed up for it (but obviously wasn't told they had to sign up) get turned away. Fortunately for them, there were some no-shows. So make sure when you call for reservations that you sign up for the shuttle, and then make sure your name is on the list when you get there! The park is nothing special - very close quarters, but we were there to go into downtown so we didn't care. Although the staff was very friendly and we were given history on the area on the shuttle drive in, they didn't impress us with their customer service (or lack thereof).
